I remember having to migrate from the WON system [0] run by Sierra (Half Life 1 publisher) to Steam, as Valve patched their games. This affected all the multiplayer mods, like Counter-Strike and Team Fortress.

At the time it seemed like an arbitrary forced-adoption strategy.
